The Relevance of Azerbaijan and Georgia in New Energy Geopolitics

The submitted thesis called "The Relevance of Azerbaijan and Georgia in New Energy Geopolitics" deals with the topic of perception of energy security from the perspective of the European Union with special emphasis put on two southern Caucasian countries - Azerbaijan and Georgia. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the topic by means of the constructivist approach. The theoretical framework is based on the redefined theory of securitization. The methodological basis is represented by the discursive analysis of the official documents issued by the European Union, embedded in the context of European Neighbourhood Policy and the Eastern Partnership initiative respectively whilst taking into consideration the external influence of the Russian Federation in the time period of approximately ten years, i.e. from 2003, when the European Neighbourhood was established, up to the present. The main objective of the submitted thesis is to assess the perception of energy security from the point of view of the European Union and to identify key contextual links and discursive themes that dominated the political discourse of the European Union in particular moments of the respective period.

European integration and Azerbaijan: problems and prospects

This topic is dedicated to the relations among the Council of Europe, European Union and Azerbaijan Republic. It considers tasks and functions, activity principles, specific features of the Council of Europe, European Union and Azerbaijan, their forms and goals. Furthermore the role of Council of Europe in the human right protection in Azerbaijan and settlements of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Thesis consist of two chapters: Chapter 1. Initial main results of the integration to Euro-Atlantic space. Chapter 2. Factors preventing cooperation with West and perspectives of integration. My goal in this thesis is to show potential of Azerbaijan in European integration and to explain how Azerbaijan is using its proper oil and gas strategy. Research about national security of Azerbaijan, how destructive policy of Armenia influence it and analyze the double standards of the European institutions. In this work, I will show how Azerbaijan integrates to European Union.

Analysis of the Oil-Rich Countries: Case Study of Russia and Azerbaijan

The subject of this diploma thesis is the analysis of oil-rich countries based on the case study of the Russian federation and the republic of Azerbaijan. This analysis will be based on the Resource curse theory which is fundamental for the conceptual framework of this diploma thesis. This theory describes the resource-rich states as more prone to be governed by an authoritarian regime. This relationship will be defined in the case study of Azerbaijan and Russia by comparative analysis of selected factors and state budget revenues from oil and gas. In the first chapter, the methodology and critical source analysis will be exercised together with the theoretical framework. In the second and third chapters, this paper will focus on the analysis of Azerbaijan and Russia based on factors of repression, war, corruption, and freedom of the press which is the core of this work-study. This diploma thesis is based on the presumption of superabundance on one source-focused export, mainly fossil fuels. Based on this relationship the hypothesis will be tested, which will subsequently confirm or refuse the theory of the resource curse. Russian Hegemony in the post-Soviet Region: The Case of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War

The Master's thesis examines Russia's hegemonic efforts to strengthen its influence in the Nagorno-Karabakh region and, therefore, in its so-called near abroad. The work is conducted as a case study of the 2020 Second Nagorno-Karabakh War and the subsequent deployment of the Russian uni-national peacekeeping mission in the region. The thesis aims to discover whether the physical presence of the Russian peacekeepers in the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the new realities after the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War increased the influence of Russia and thus strengthened its hegemonic position in the South Caucasus region or not. The thesis is framed by hegemonic stability theories and regional security complex and supplemented by empirical data.

Dynamic of Turkish-Azerbaijan relations in the 1990s

With the emergence of the multipolarity and the formation of new entities in the Eurasian space that happened after the collapse of the USSR in the 1990s, Turkey search for new ways economic, cultural and political alliance. Turkey decline role in the West-East tensions and was forced to turn into the East. The optimal way out of this situation was a rapprochement with Azerbaijan, from both national and ethnical point of view. Thus, the master's thesis aims to analyze the Turkish-Azerbaijani relations in the 1990s. For this purpose, the following tasks have been set. To analyse rapprochement trends in relations between Azerbaijan and Turkey after the independence and to examine the role of internal and external factors in this area, as well as the role of the legal framework in relations that were build.

Oil and its influence on the development of democracy. Comparative study of Norway and Azerbaijan

On cases of Norway and Azerbaijan, the Bachelor's thesis examines the relationship between the oil and gas production revenues and the quality of democracy. Norway is one of the few countries in the world, that had successfully avoided the Resource curse symptoms. On the other hand, Republic of Azerbaijan is typical example of a state, where oil and gas revenues helped to promote the authoritarian regime. The thesis is trying to find key factors of Norway's oil and gas management success, and also to point out, whether these factors were absent in the case of Azerbaijan. The thesis is focused on the amount of oil and gas related revenues, and its influence on developement of democracy in observed countries. Finally, the thesis responds to following questions: Is the quality of democracy influenced by the amount of revenues from oil and gas? In what way did the revenues allocated from the mineral resources extraction helped to preserve the current regimes? Does Norwegian model provide guidance for avoiding the symptoms of the Resource curse?

Analysis of relations of the South Caucasus countries

Pavel Makovský: Analýza vztahů jihokavkazských států Abstrakt The South Caucasus is very heterogeneous and dynamic region. In the area are conflicts not only between Christianity and Islam, but also major geopolitical actors. The world power is interested in this area thanks to exploitation of oil, natural gas and pipeline from Azerbaijan. The main aim of the bachelor thesis is to analyze the interrelationships of all three states, which is based on principles of liberal-idealist tradition. This thesis is focused on the economic power and interdependence of foreign trade, the intensity and the results of international meetings of politicians or the involvement of transnational institutions and their benefits. Each state takes to its neighbors totally different attitude and because of it are the resulting relationships quite different. Diversity of these states encourages orientation on the superpowers and institutions. These interests puts their potential partners against each other. Instability of the region confirms the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which is still actual, because there were mutual armed clashes even in April 2016. Constructing Nagorno-Karabakh: a diachronic discourse analysis

In over 20 years of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, there has been no significant progress towards a peaceful agreement. It has been argued that there is not enough incentive for leaders to agree to a compromise and that the citizens are not ready to accept one. In this context, the way the conflict and the enemy are described in public discourse is important not only because it represents the viewpoints of those producing the discourse but because it can have a real effect on public opinion. This paper examines discourse on Azerbaijan and the future of Nagorno-Karabakh in an official newspaper, showing that distrust of Azerbaijan and rigid expectations about the future of Nagorno-Karabakh are dominant.
